German Oriental Rug Market Cools Down - Op/Ed

Unofficial numbers from Oriental rug dealers in Germany confirm reports that the industry is experiencing a correction. Other European countries are seeing similar trends as business moves west toward the United States. Germans are re known for their expert love of Oriental rugs and the market there has been relatively good.

Germany, a major driving force in the Oriental and Persian rug market for hundreds of years has finally seen a slight cool-down in terms of demand. Although, we must keep in mind that their market has always had a steady base of sales and “rug lovers.” German investors have been recorded as founders of large rug and carpet manufacturing centers in Persia and the Orient over the past several hundred years. Oriental rugs have a defined place in the German culture.

Recent reports from Persian rug dealers in Germany confirm that the bulk of growth in the sector has been coming from the United States. It seems Americans are starting to appreciate these wonderful textiles as much as the major European countries. U.S. Demand points to a trend in interior design whereby Oriental rugs are the centerpiece of a room. Mainstream Americans as well as design experts are fueling the growth.

Its not just the traditional antique Oriental and Persian rugs either. Modern machine-made rugs, with contemporary designs are flooding the market to accommodate the demand.

On the more positive site, as retail rug and carpet sales slide in Germany and other European countries, the demand for textiles produced here has increased. Rugs made in Europe are just as popular as those from Persia and the Orient. Textile exports from Asia and Europe to the U.S. are forecast to continue increasing until the foresee-able future. Auctions in Germany and Europe also reflect the changes in the market and the move from retail to manufacturing.
